Compress Image – Reduce File Size

Large image files slow down websites, take up storage, and make file sharing awkward. Most images straight from a camera or design tool are much larger than they need to be for their actual use. Compression reduces file size by removing data that viewers typically cannot notice — resulting in a smaller file that looks essentially the same.

How Image Compression Works

There are two types of compression: lossy and lossless. Lossy compression discards some image data to achieve smaller sizes — JPG compression works this way. Lossless compression reorganizes data more efficiently without discarding any — PNG compression works this way. The right approach depends on the image type and how it will be used.

For photographs shared online, a moderate amount of lossy compression reduces file size by 60 to 80 percent with no noticeable quality difference at normal viewing sizes. For graphics, logos, and images with text, lossless or light compression is preferable to avoid blurring sharp edges.

Why It Matters for Websites

Page load speed is a ranking factor in Google search. Images are typically the largest elements on a webpage and the main reason pages load slowly. Compressing your images before uploading them means faster page loads, better user experience, and potentially better search ranking. A properly compressed site image is usually under 200KB; an unoptimized image from a phone camera might be 4 to 8 MB.

Email attachments also benefit. Many email providers limit attachment size to 10 or 25 MB. If you have multiple images to send, compressing them first keeps the total size manageable.
