Images do not always come out oriented correctly. Phone cameras sometimes save photos sideways or upside down depending on how the device was held. Scans from flatbed scanners can come through at 90 or 180 degree offsets. Design assets imported from other systems may have the wrong orientation. When Rotation Is Needed

The most common case is smartphone photos. When you take a portrait photo with your phone held vertically, the camera stores orientation metadata telling apps to display it correctly. But when that image is uploaded to a website, used in a PDF, or opened in software that ignores that metadata, it appears sideways. Rotating the image 90 degrees and re-saving removes the dependency on metadata and ensures correct display everywhere.

Scanned documents are another frequent case. A batch of scanned pages may include some that fed through the scanner sideways or were placed upside down. Rotating each page to the correct orientation before using or sharing the document is a routine part of document preparation.

No re-compression is applied beyond what the output format requires. The image dimensions swap when rotating 90 degrees — a 1200×800 landscape image becomes 800×1200 portrait after a 90-degree rotation.
