The difference between JPG and PNG comes down to how each format handles color information and transparency. JPG uses compression that slightly reduces image quality with each save — acceptable for photographs but problematic for graphics, logos, or anything with sharp edges and flat colors. When You Should Convert JPG to PNG

The most common reason is transparency. PNG supports transparent backgrounds; JPG does not. If you have a photo or graphic that needs to be placed on a colored background or layered in a design tool, and you want the background to show through, you need PNG format. A logo on a website, for example, almost always needs to be PNG so it does not have a white square behind it.

Another reason is editing. If you plan to open an image, make changes, and save it again multiple times — as happens in graphic design work — PNG is the better starting format because each save does not degrade the quality the way JPG does.

Sharpness is also a factor. Text, diagrams, and screenshots look noticeably sharper in PNG. A JPG screenshot of text will often show soft edges around letters. The same screenshot in PNG will be crisp.

File Size Tradeoff

PNG files are generally larger than JPG files for photographic content. If you are converting a landscape photograph to PNG, the file will likely be two to four times larger with no visible quality improvement for a regular viewer. PNG is worth the extra size when transparency or lossless quality matters. For photos displayed on the web with no transparency requirement, JPG is usually the better choice.
